Planning a summer wedding? Then plan your wedding flowers NOW!

Wedding flowersSummer is the perfect time for a wedding, with the promise of balmy warm evenings and cloudless blue skies.

There's also an abundance of flowers with lots of different blooms available, which are also less expensive because of their seasonal availability.

Summer weddings are known for being full of flowers, but don't leave it too late to plan the day of your dreams.

Don't be restricted

In the summer months florists will have a much greater choice of flowers that they can provide immediately, with stock levels boosted by the improved availability.

However, while they will have some blooms which they will be able to provide with little notice, to have the widest choice you'll need to order in advance.

Summer offers the best opportunity to have a fabulous choice of flowers so take advantage of this and don't just pick from those which are immediately available.

Traditional summer flowers

The classic country wedding conjures up images of beautiful roses, the traditional flower of England not just in shades of pink, white and cream, but yellows, reds, oranges and even lilac.

The Norma Jean Rose is one of the most popular, with its large heads filled with the familiar fragrant perfume. Mixed with sweet peas and open peonies, roses can create the perfect bouquet which is beautiful and sweetly scented.

Roses are intrinsically a romantic flower too, and this makes them a great choice for the summer wedding. If you are opting for this pastel summer palette, you could also include other blooms such as agapanthus, a delicate blue and white, Sweet Williams plus foxgloves, delphinium and lupins for some height in pedestal or tall arrangements.

Bold choices

Wedding flowers FifeAlthough a soft and subtle floral palette can look simply stunning, it's not the only option thanks to the wide choice of summer flowers.

Bold and bright tones can look fantastic, with everyone in their colourful summer clothes and the deep blue backdrop of the sky (with a bit of luck!).

Cornflowers with their vivid blue hue are the ideal flower for a blue or mauve themed wedding, while if you've chosen yellow or orange you could pick from gerberas and sunflowers. Hydrangeas light up the room with their stunning pinks and purples, and work well to complement pastel blooms.

If you want a classic cream, ivory or white colour scheme, using bright flowers as table runners, or adding a small corsage to the top of every chair is a way to add an accent without dominating the décor.

Lots of ways to use flowers

When you're planning flowers for your wedding, there are lots more to consider than simply your bouquet.

The centrepieces, table runners, dressing for chairs, aisle flowers and floral decorations for the venue all need careful consideration, and all need to be planned together rather than in isolation.

For example, choosing a place for your reception because of its outstanding views will be pointless if you then opt for flowers which are bulky and tall and block out the window.

It's good to have an idea of the kinds of colours you want and flowers that you like, but pick a good florist and you'll be able to trust them to recreate your vision using their own judgement. Wedding florists have the experience of knowing what works and what will create the greatest effect for the least outlay, so don't waste this experience.

However, some of the flowers your florist suggests may take at least 6 weeks to arrange, particularly those from more exotic locations such as South America. Planning your summer wedding in plenty of time means you will be able to have a far better selection.

For a fantasy summer wedding, start thinking about your flowers now. Your florist will be able to provide you with plenty of advice about what blooms will be available and when and also make suggestions about how to create the wall of colour you want. Plan in plenty of time and you can be certain your wedding flowers won't be limited to what was available, but the floral arrangement that you really wanted to have.

At Blooms we offer a free consultation for wedding flowers; book an appointment with us now to discuss the types of flowers and colours that you want on your special day.
