Giving Flowers for a Baby Shower

A baby shower is a wonderful way to celebrate the imminent arrival of the baby and to pamper the mum-to-be ahead of the big day.

Typical baby shower gifts are related to the newborn, or the pregnancy, with nappy cakes and other presents having the same theme.

But as one of the last chances for the mum to relax before the arrival of the baby, flowers can be a fabulous surprise and ensure she feels truly treated. Here’s a look at how to go about giving flowers for a baby shower.

Pink or blue?

Pink flowers for a baby showerNot all baby showers reveal the gender of the newborn but if you know whether it’s a boy or a girl, you can tailor your floral gift to be far more specific.

Some baby showers are themed in either blue or pink and if this is the case, it makes your choice of flowers much easier.

Some blue flowers that you might want to use include blue hyacinths, delphinium, forget-me-nots, hydrangea, tweedia or even a deep blue orchid.

If pinks are what are needed, the choice is far greater so you can quite literally have your pick of the bunch! Some popular inclusions are gerbera daisies, roses, lilies, carnations, freesias, pansies, calla lilies, hydrangeas and tulips.

Surprising the expectant mum with a beautiful bouquet in the colour which matches the baby’s sex is a great way to tie in the flowers with the theme of the baby shower.

A relaxing influence

Everyone loves to receive flowers but scientific studies have shown that blooms have a tangible impact on mood and wellbeing.

Studies have revealed that flowers lift the mood, help to relieve anxiety and depression and help ‘happy emotions’ in both men and women.

A separate study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry revealed that the fragrance of flowers could prove to be a powerful de-stressor. Their research suggested that the sweet smell of blooms could help to improve relaxation and reduce stress levels, very important in mums-to-be.

During pregnancy, there are many substances which have to be avoided for fear of harm to the baby so an all-natural solution to boosting mood and increasing relaxation has to be a good idea.

Unique arrangement

Blue flowers for a baby showerMost women love flowers so an indulgent bouquet will undoubtedly be a big hit with almost every new mum, especially at a time when so much attention is on the baby.

However, if you want to be really different you could opt for a more ‘alternative’ presentation.

Nappy cakes are popular at baby showers so why not complement this by creating a floral onesie?

To do this you’ll need some onesies, and maybe some wash-cloths too, ready to roll up into the shape of a tiny baby onesie. Once you’ve made the outline with the assistance of the rolled up cloth, decorate the ‘onesie’ with flowers. Scatter petals over the top and push the stems in between the folds to create a cute but effective presentative which will make a fabulous centerpiece.

Just like a celebrity

If you’re not yet convinced about whether flowers play a big part at a baby shower, just take a look at style extraordinaire, Kim Kardashian.

At the baby shower for North, she opted for a garden theme, with petals and pink flowers everywhere to honour the arrival of a little girl.

Flowers might not be your first thought for a baby shower gift but you can be certain they will be one of the highlights. Flowers are always a thoughtful and indulgent gift and the mum-to-be will be delighted to have something which is just for her. And if she wants a more permanent souvenir, it’s easy to dry or press a flower from the arrangement too.

Make your gift one to remember, and say congratulations with flowers.
