Here is our advice for your big day

Whether you dream of walking down the aisle in a traditional white dress or keeping it simple with a tailored suit, the flowers you choose can really add a touch of elegance and class to your big day.

It's not just about your bouquet; there's the centrepieces for the tables, any additional decorations for the venue plus you might want to think about corsages for some of your guests.

If you haven't yet spoken to a florist or don't know exactly what flowers you want for your wedding give us a call. Here are a few tips which could help you make the best choice.

Be flexible

Even if you don't know much about flowers, you may have done your research and fallen in love with a particular bloom that you've seen used to great effect.

It's a very good idea to have some thoughts about what you like, and sites such as Pinterest are fabulous for helping to spark your imagination.

However, there are lots of different factors which could influence what wedding flowers will be best for you, and it may mean that you don't end up with your first choice. There's lots of reasons for this such as the flowers being out of season, or even too expensive for your budget.

It's therefore far better to view your ideas as a starting point and have a degree of flexibility over how you develop your own wedding flower designs, with help from your florist.

At Blooms we will ensure you get a spectacular end result.

Flowers for all seasons

The flowers you choose for your wedding will depend on both your personal taste and the colour theme for your big day. But depending on the season you get married, some types of flowers are more requested than others.

Here are a few ideas about the colours and flowers used in each season:

Spring: Light delicate blues and creamy soft yellows are popular choices and suit most weddings. Example flowers might include tulips, primroses, muscari and tête à tête daffodils; all are sweetly scented and bring the fresh colours of spring into your wedding.

Summer: One of the best seasons for choice of flowers, beautiful pinks and purples add a flash of colour, setting off a white or cream dress to perfection. Wild country flowers such as sweet pea peonies are hard to beat.

Autumn: Rich autumnal tones such as russets and burnt oranges provide a deep, earthy palette. Calla lilies and gerberas look fabulous offset with hypericum berries.

Winter: A magical season to get married, the theme has to be crisp silvers and icy whites set off with lush green foliage and deep red berries. Silver brunia and astrantia combined with pinecones and evergreen boughs can provide a festive feel to your celebrations!

Most popular choices

If you don't want to match your choice of flower to a season, you might want to consider some of the most popular wedding flowers. This doesn't mean your bouquet or centrepiece will look the same as everyone else's but it allows you to get good quality flowers for a reasonable price – the end look will be as unique as you and Blooms can create!

Here are a few ideas of some of the most popular choices of flowers and the colours they are available in:

  • Roses – various colours
  • Calla lilies – white, burgundy, orange and yellow
  • Hydrangea – white, blue, pink, green, purple and yellow
  • Orchids – white and purple (Phalaenopsis orchid) or green, white, pink, yellow and burgundy (Cymbidium orchid)
  • Peonies – multiple but commonly white, pink and red
  • Stephanotis – white
  • Tulips – various colours
  • Hyacinth – various colours

One other factor to consider is whether you want your flowers to be scented. If you have a strong preference about this one way or the other you need to make sure you let us know. Not all flowers are scented whilst others are very aromatic indeed.

We hope this has given you some ideas and we hope to hear from you when you're ready to arrange the flowers for your wedding.
